5 Tips for Overcoming Dental Anxiety in Children: How to Make a Visit to the Pediatric Dentist More Relaxing

With empathy, preparation, and a few magic tricks, a trip to the dentist can be a positive experience even for anxious children.

For many children, a visit to the dentist is an exciting event—and sometimes one that brings feelings of anxiety. At Kamilla Pediatric and Adolescent Dental Practice, we aim to prevent fears from arising in the first place through caring support and child-friendly communication. To help ensure that your child’s first or next dental visit is as relaxed as possible, we’ve put together five helpful tips for you:

1. Start Early – Build Trust

The sooner children become familiar with the dentist's office, the better. Even as infants (starting at 6 months of age), it's a good idea to schedule a playful introductory visit. This helps build a sense of trust—without any treatment at all.

2. Preparation Without Pressure

Preparation Without Pressure: Explain to your child in simple terms what happens at the dentist. It’s best to avoid terms like “shot” or “drill.” For example, we prefer to talk about a “tooth excavator” or a “magic wand.”

3. Be a role model—stay calm

Children can sense how we adults are feeling. If you seem nervous yourself, you’ll quickly pass that tension on to your child. That’s why it helps to stay calm and approach your child with confidence.

4. Role-playing at home

Play “dentist’s office” together at home. With stuffed animals, a toothbrush, and a mirror, your child will become familiar with the process—and can try out what happens at their own pace.

5. Emphasize positive experiences

Depending on their age, children’s developing brains can only process so much at a time, so it’s important to choose the right time of day. Young children tend to view a morning dentist appointment more positively than an afternoon one. After the visit, it helps to frame the experience in a positive light. A word of praise, a small surprise, or a fun outing afterward can help them remember the experience as a pleasant one.

Our Goal: Fear-Free Dental Care

At our pediatric dental practice in Mainz, we place great importance on making your child feel comfortable. With a calm approach, plenty of time, and attentive care, we guide our young patients on their journey to healthy teeth—without any fear.
