Children and Sensitive Teeth: What Parents Can Do
16.06.2025
“Ouch!” – When children suddenly flinch while brushing their teeth or eating a spoonful of ice cream, sensitive teeth may be the cause. At the Kamilla Pediatric Dental Practice, we see cases like this all the time—and we know that with loving care and the right treatment, we can often make a big difference.
How can parents tell if their child has sensitive teeth?
Sensitive teeth usually become noticeable when exposed to cold, hot, or sweet foods, or when brushing teeth. Some children describe it as a “tingling” sensation; others avoid certain foods or don’t like having their teeth brushed.Possible causes—ranging from completely harmless to requiring treatment
Sensitivity can have many causes:- The tooth enamel has not yet fully developed.
- A disorder affecting enamel formation.
- Early-stage tooth decay.
- Sometimes it’s simply a phase of intense tooth replacement.
What can parents do? Our recommendations:
- Gentle dental care:
Soft children’s toothbrushes and special children’s toothpastes for sensitive teeth are gentle on the gums and strengthen the enamel. - Patience when brushing:
It’s better to brush gently and thoroughly than to press too hard. Parents are welcome to carefully brush their children’s teeth afterward—with sensitivity. - Be careful with acids:
Frequent consumption of fruit juices, soft drinks, or acidic fruits can erode tooth enamel. It’s best to rinse with water afterward and avoid giving acidic foods right before brushing. - Regular checkups:
Especially for children with sensitive teeth due to enamel development disorders, we recommend visits every three months at our pediatric dental practice in Mainz.
